A day trip from Tivat: driving the Kotor serpentines and the village of Njeguši
One of the biggest advantages of staying in Tivat is its central position: all the beauties of the Montenegrin coast and hinterland are within easy reach. If you want a day filled with mountain air, history and incredible viewpoints, this car tour is an absolute favourite of our guests.
The Kotor serpentines (the old Austro-Hungarian road)
From Tivat you head towards Kotor, and then the climb begins along the historic road with 25 numbered hairpin bends. Every bend opens a more beautiful and wider view of the whole Bay of Kotor. At the famous bend that forms the letter “M”, stop for photos: it is one of the most beautiful photo viewpoints in all of Europe.
The village of Njeguši – homeland of the Petrović dynasty
Once you have mastered the serpentines, you arrive in the quiet mountain village of Njeguši, at the foot of Lovćen. Be sure to visit one of the local prosciutto smokehouses here, try the famous Njeguši prosciutto, homemade cheese and mead, and visit the birthplace of Petar II Petrović Njegoš.
Lovćen National Park and the Mausoleum on Jezerski Vrh
Continue through the pine forests of the national park to the second-highest peak of Lovćen. After climbing 461 steps through a tunnel, you reach Njegoš’s mausoleum. From the circular viewpoint behind the mausoleum, on a clear day you can see almost all of Montenegro: from the Adriatic Sea to the peaks of Durmitor and Lake Skadar.
Returning via Cetinje or Budva
On the way back you can descend via the old royal capital Cetinje and then along the main road via Budva back to Tivat, making a beautiful circular route.
Practical tip
Even in July and August, bring a light jacket or a long-sleeved sweatshirt: on Lovćen the temperature is often up to 10 °C lower than on the coast in Tivat.
