Solila and the Island of Flowers: nature and birdwatching in Tivat

Nature around Tivat

Known for its marina and promenade, Tivat also has a quieter, greener side. For nature and bird lovers there is Solila, the former salt pans that are now a protected habitat, and the Island of Flowers near the coast. Ideal for a morning before the beach or for a day when you have had enough of the crowds.

Solila: a bird habitat

Solila is a protected bird habitat (an ornithological reserve), and the shallow water and salty flats attract different species, especially during migration. Bring binoculars and a camera. Move quietly and keep to marked paths so as to leave the birds in peace.

When to go

For birdwatching the best times are early morning and early evening, when the light is soft and the birds are most active. Midday is hot and there is less activity. Spring and autumn bring the most variety because of migration, but there is something to see in summer too.

The Island of Flowers

The Island of Flowers, in view close to the coast, is a lovely goal for a short walk and photos. Before you set out, check current information about access and visiting conditions, as these can change.

Combine it with a beach

Nearby is Kalardovo beach, sandy and about 250 m long, with shallow water that families love. You can finish a morning of nature with a swim. Bring water, a hat and sunscreen; shade is not available everywhere in these places.

Practical tips

  • Bring mosquito repellent, especially towards evening near wet areas.
  • Wear comfortable shoes; paths can be muddy after rain.
  • Do not feed or disturb animals, and take your rubbish with you.
