A guide to the tastes of Boka: what and where to try during your stay in Tivat
A stay on the Montenegrin coast is not complete without enjoying the Mediterranean table. For centuries Boka cuisine has combined the gifts of the Adriatic with the traditions of the hinterland, creating simple but unforgettable dishes prepared with olive oil, fresh herbs and garlic. Here is what you must put on your food list.
Seafood delicacies in Boka konobas
Order grilled fish (gilthead bream, sea bass or dentex) served with traditional Swiss chard and potatoes drizzled with homemade olive oil. Do not miss the black cuttlefish risotto and the traditional fishermen’s brudet, slowly simmered with homemade white wine and served with polenta.
Mussels buzara
The bay itself has numerous shellfish farms. Fresh mussels cooked in white buzara (white wine, garlic, parsley and olive oil) are the most authentic taste of the sea. With warm homemade bread to mop up the sauce, this dish is a real feast for the palate.
Cold starters from the hinterland
Before the main course, in every good konoba ask for a platter with Njeguši prosciutto, aged cheese in oil and homemade black olives. Dried in the clean air at the foot of Lovćen, this prosciutto has a special aroma that goes perfectly with a glass of Montenegrin Vranac wine.
